Various Artists
I am Sam Soundtrack (CD only $18.95). The local radio
stations have been playing cuts from this album of covers
of Beatles' tunes. And from what I hear, I love this album.
It contains many of my favorite Beatles' songs from Sheryl
Crow's version of "Mother Nature's Son" to Sarah McLachlan's
"Blackbird," and Rufus Wainwright's cover of "Across the Universe."
It will be in our March listening station and we have an in-store
play copy. Come on in and listen to modern interpretations
of some classic Beatles' music.

Various Artists
Fast Folk (CD only $20.95). This
two-CD compilation brings 34 artists, such
as Lucy Kaplansky, Suzanne Vega, Shawn
Colvin, and John Gorka. A great price for
great music!

Various Artists
Pure Jazz Encore (CD only $19.95). This follow-up
to the first (and wonderful) Pure Jazz release features ninete3en
of the most popular jazz artist from the past to the present.
Includes Nina Simone, Diana Krall, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald,
and Louis Armstrong.

Sade
Lovers Live (CD only $19.95). After an 18-year hiatus,
Sade made a triumphant return last summer with her triple
platinum, Lovers Rock. This album documents the magnificence
of her recent tour, featuring highlights from her show, including
new songs as well as classic hits like "is it a Crime," "Sweetest
Taboo," and "Smooth Operator." Find out why Vibe magazine
names hers the best concert our of the year!

|
Suzzy and Maggie
Roche
Zero Church (CD only $16.95). This release defies
classification. It is musically lovely, unpretentiously spiritual
and completely original. This special recording is composed
of meditations and prayers from all walks of life and traditions,
enhance on several tracks by the amazing Ysaye Maria Barnwell
(from Sweet Honey in the Rock). A last minute addition to
the album is "New York City," a moving song they wrote for
the September 11thWorld trade Center victims' families and
sang in the fire stations of New York.

|
Kasey Chambers
Barricades and Brickwalls, (CD
only $18.95). Her solo debut album, The
Captain, was names on over 50 critics
"Best Of" lists including Rolling Stone's
Top 50 Recordings of 2000. And now the
folks of Rolling Stone say this one is
even better. While that is for you to
decide, I think you'll find pleasure in
listening to her stunning voice and lyrics
rich in emotion and wisdom.

India.Arie
Voyage to India, ($18.95).
I love her thoughtful, adept lyricism, acoustic guitar mastery,
and her lush, mellow vocals. India.Arie attracted music
lovers' attention and garnered many Grammy nominations with
her first release, Acoustic Soul. This
sophomore release is bound to have an experience the same
critical acclaim as her debut album.

|
Various artists
Queer Stock Queer Soup, ($16.95).
Bound to be big big big. Full of contemporary artist the
likes of which include Alix Olson, Doria Roberts, Jill Sobule,
Melissa Ferrick, and Holly Near. Proceeds benefit queer
youth.

|

Shemekia Copeland
Talking to Strangers, ($16.95). Stunning
vocals just about says it all. With blues, funk and rock influences,
Copeland teams up with Dr. John's New Orleans grooves and
his funky airtight band.

|

Patricia Barber
Verse, ($19.95). Two years
have passed since, Nightclub, her highly acclaimed
release of jazz standards. She follows up with this new
studio album composed completely of never-before-recorded
original songs. Barber is a jazz singer and accomplished
pianist and is definitely someone music lovers will want
to know.

|
Rosas
Rosas, ($17.95). Bringing together styles
and sounds as diverse as 70s go-go, 80s Latin rock and contemporary
pop, the result is an innovative and cutting edge combination
by these four extremely talented new performers. Creative
and eclectic, this CD presents an interesting musical synergy.

|
Tracy Chapman
Let it Rain, ($17.95). Every
now and again the world is lucky enough to have an artist
whose work consistently is wonderful. This album is no exception.
Her depth as a singer-songwriter is evident in this long-awaited
release.

Anne Heaton
Black Notebook, ($15.95). A real surprise
this release turned out to be for me! The CD jacket did not
initially draw me in, but I took a chance and listened to
it anyway. And I'm glad I did! Heaton's singing and phrasing
are unique and appealing. Incisive lyrics supported by masterful
arrangements just about sums up this album. To me, it was
the biggest pleasant surprise of the season that is filled
with a bounty of great releases.

Various artists
O Sister! Vol. 2, ($16.95).
Volume one was such a big hit that the label couldn't help
but release a follow-up to music that is deep within the
American musical tradition. Features four winners of the
International bluegrass Music Associations' "Female
Vocalist of the Year" award: Alison Krauss, Rhonda
Vincent, Claire Lynch and Lynn Morris along with country
music legend Hazel Dickens.

It's about Eve, ($12.95).
100% of net proceeds of this album benefit charities that
do breast cancer research and outreach programs around breast
cancer awareness. A special bonus track, "the Word,"
features Joan Jett on lead vocals, Sara Lee on bass and
Leni Stern on guitar. This album, for many reasons, is one
to add to your collection or to give as a gift.

Lori's
Musical Picks of the Year
2001
Musical Pick of the
Year (a little late): Choosing which album
deserves this title was not easy this year. It
was very difficult to choose from the richness
and abundance of wonderful music created in
2001. To name a few contenders: Si*Se to
Aaliyah to Jill Scott, Alicia
Keys to the incredible soundtracks of Oh
Brother, Where art Thou? and its terrific
counterpart Oh Sister, Where Art Thou? to
the Pure Jazz release to Alix
Olson's incredible and incisive spoken word
album. You can see how difficult it is to
highlight just one, but someone "has" to do it,
so it might as well be me.
The
musical pick of 2001 goes to
India.Arie, Acoustic Soul
(CD only $18.95).

This Grammy nominated
release has propelled her into the national
limelight. And well it should. She has a
beautiful and complex singing voice reminiscent
of Sade and Roberta Flack. She is also a gifted
songwriter who uses a blend of acoustic and
hip-hop arrangements in her poignant and
inspiring lyrics about life, love, friendship
and what it means to be a woman. Her lyrics are
decidedly feminist and her song, "Video" is a
testimony to a woman's love of her body just as
it is. "Video" is a must listen for anyone who
knows and loves a girl growing up in the
aftermath of Twiggy and for anyone who wants to
be inspired to love her body just as it is.
