Holly Near

Crushed: The Love Song Collection
(CD, $18.95)
Who can forget the haunting and compelling
"Fire in the Rain"? This song is just one of the
many Holly has compiled here for us to relive decades of
love won love lost. A must for anyone who has ever had a
crush on this important contributor to women's music.

Ann Reed

Gift of Age
(CD, $16.95)
I frankly don't know how Ann Reed continues
to write tunes immediately likable. Ann's gift of age is
reflected not only in her steady maturing as an artist but
also in her ability to capture the simplest of life activities,
such as greeting someone and crafting the essence of that
moment into a lovely tribute to the joy and power of human
connection. Highly recommended to those who love her music
and to those folks not yet familiar with her musicianship
and artful songwriting ability. It is an enjoyable, lovely
album to give to anyone regardless of age!

Sweet Honey in the Rock

The
Women Gather (CD,
$17.95)
Recorded
in celebration of their 30th(!) anniversary of adding beauty
to the world and creating political change, this album features
18 brand new songs. Their deep musical roots in the sacred
music of the black church - spirituals, hymns and gospel,
combine with jazz and blues to create a sound that is truly
like no other. Produced by Toshi Reagon, a solo artist and
the daughter of Sweet Honey founder Bernice Johnson Reagon,
these songs relate history, point the finger at injustice,
encourage activism and sing the praises of love.

Lori's Musical
Pick of the Year 2002
Well, it’s been a great here for music
written, produced, and sung by women!
The CD I keep returning to, though, is Norah
Jones’s Come Away with Me, a jazz
and pop-oriented collection of soulful songwriting that immediately
catches your ear. You’ll find yourself comparing her vocal
agility to Billie Holiday, Patsy Cline, and Minnie Ripperton.
Her unique vocal soprano timbre never irritates, but calls the
listener into the song. Her “Don’t Know Why I Didn’t
Come” and “Come Away with Me” have received
the most airplay and acclaim, but other songs are equally as compelling.
The musical pick of 2002 goes to
Nora Jones, Come Away with Me (CD only,
$17.95).

Norah Jones is a new artist on
the scene, and I encourage you all not to miss this terrific album.
