LORI's MUSIC PICK FOR 1998

Kalevala: Dream of the Salmon Maiden by Ruth MacKenzie

Well, 1998 has proven to be yet another memorable music year! The decision for the 1998 musical pick of the year was an easy one, however. This year the honor goes to local artist Ruth MacKenzie's Kalevala: Dream of the Salmon Maiden, (CD only, $16.95). Kalevala is the music from Ruth's fabulous production by the same name, a theatrical event that left the audience in tears and ecstasy--talk to anyone who had the chance to see it! We play Kalevala a lot at the store, and it is wonderful to see women immediately drawn to its rich and haunting vocals. Don't miss this one!

Eva Cassiday

Songbird, tape $10.95, CD $15.95. Whoa! This is a wonderful, aptly-titled album! Sadly, this highly talented vocal artist died of cancer in 1996 at age 33. Fortunately, she left us with this just-released collection of songs necessitating incredible vocal control and technique. Her voice is passionate, pure, and her sense of musicality is extraordinary. Between you and me, I am tired of singers covering "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." But this songbird's interpretation of this classic stopped me in my tracks when I first heard it, and I like her arrangement of it best of all!

Rosemary Clooney (with k.d. Lang)

Rosemary Clooney 70, CD only $16.95. I don't know what it is about her that makes me smile. Certainly it could be her talent, or the songs that she sings like "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning," "Turn Around," and "Come Rain or Come Shine," or maybe because I enjoy strolling down musical memory lane, but, nonetheless, thie release is a winner in my book! k.d. and Linda Ronstadt join Rosemary on "Our Love is Here to Stay."

Cris Williamson and Tret Fure

Between the Covers, tape $10.50, CD $16.95. What could be better than Cris and Tret singing love songs to each other? I know: they would sing them to me! Anyway, this second collaboration by Cris and Tret has received great reviews in mainstream and women's presses. When you listen to the creative lyrics and various musical styles on this album, you'll know why. It is every bit as clever and literate as Cris's other 19 albums. Fans will enjoy their disarmingly passionate lyrics, rich in subtext, and infused with emotion in a single breath. With the release of her fifth album Joanne Rand once again provides compelling evidence that a relatively "undiscovered" artist can produce some of the finest music in America today. Most of the songs reflect Rand's two years of living with her brother, Jordan, who died of AIDS in 1995. They paint a beautiful and moving audio portrait of grief, and rebirth.

Jan Krist

Curious, tape $10.50, CD $15.95. What a find! This new artist is great! Effectively trim in musical style yet full of thoughtful, moving, emotionally evocative lyrics. Many songs are written straight out of typical human experience with lyrics and images to which listeners can easily relate.
